Ken Yurkiw
Ken Yurkiw

North American Representative

Ken Yurkiw's distinguished career in the oil and gas industry, spanning more than four decades, commenced in the late 1970s as a Process Operator with Dow Chemical. His early years were marked by a relentless dedication to learning and growth, evident in his certification as a 4th-class Power Engineer and his acquisition of trade certifications in Welding and Pipefitting.

This diverse skill set, coupled with his hands-on experience in operations, maintenance, and construction, laid the groundwork for his future as a highly regarded maintenance leader. Ken's passion for his work and commitment to excellence drove him to take on increasingly challenging roles throughout his career. At Dow Chemicals in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, working as a field administrator for major projects, he formalized his construction experience. He earned certification in the University of Alberta Construction Administration Program. Later, as a Maintenance Coordinator, he contributed to the completion, commissioning, and start-up of the Light Hydrocarbons 1 Facility (LHC1), leveraging his unique blend of experience to achieve synergies between departments and refine processes and best practices.

Ken's leadership skills were further tested and proven when he served as the Assistant Turnaround Manager for the inaugural LHC1 Turnaround in 1998 and the LHC8 turnaround in Oyster Creek, Texas. His success in these complex projects solidified his reputation as a capable and influential leader in managing turnarounds.

As a Maintenance Leader at Dow Chemical, Ken spearheaded cost-effective, efficient, and safe maintenance execution across various business units. His crowning achievement during this time was the planning and preparation for the 2004 Major Turnaround, which was completed without a safety recordable, environmental reportable, or near-neighbor complaint, all while meeting budget and schedule targets.

In 2006, Ken brought his expertise to Suncor Energy, where he focused on integrating capital scope with maintenance and developing comprehensive turnaround programs. His knowledge and leadership were instrumental in driving improvements in the methods deployed in the preparation and execution of turnarounds. Ken's contributions extended to the team that developed Suncor's Operational Excellence Management System, where he served as the Manager of Maintenance Controls and later as the Completion, Commissioning, and Start-up Manager in Projects.

Ken has demonstrated a strong commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence throughout his career. While Ken retired from Suncor Energy on June 30, 2023, he is looking forward to the opportunity to continue learning and contributing to the industry that played an important role in his career.
